LightSquared’s latest salvo blames GPS for interference

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The struggle between GPS and LightSquared is turning into a high-powered battle as decision time approaches for the Federal Communications Commission. Frequencies allocated for LightSquared’s new open wireless broad-band network are adjacent to those assigned to GPS. Those who rely on GPS are concerned that LightSquared’s stronger power could distort GPS signals. Aviation groups and several government agencies have filed comments with the FCC citing the dangers this poses, from billions of dollars to death. Now, LightSquared has brought out the big guns to try and keep the frequencies. With Congress back in session, the company is running full page ads in “The Washington Post” and "Wall Street Journal" saying the GPS industry is “squatting on our spectrum.” The ad accuses the GPS industry of creating the current problem.
