Ice suspected in engine failure

Aircraft: Piper Cherokee. Injuries: None. Location: Mansfield, Mass. Aircraft damage: Substantial. What reportedly happened: The pilot performed a preflight inspection prior to departure, including topping off the fuel tanks. There was no observed fuel contamination.
