Hong Kong unveils Phase I of midfield development project. Becomes world’s largest freight airport

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) unveiled details of the HKD7 billion (USD899 million) Phase I of its mid-field development project late last month. The midfield concourse is the last piece of land on the airport island available for large-scale development and aims at boosting passenger capacity to meet rising traffic demand. Freight traffic is also on the rise. Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reached an important milestone last year by becoming the world’s busiest freight airport, overtaking Memphis International Airport. Memphis had been the world’s busiest cargo airport since at least 1992.
